About Our Learning Pods:
To further support what you are teaching at home, curriculum elements are brought to life as they are embedded into authentic learning experiences involving poetry, writing, scientific observations and investigations, art, music, and much more! Deep learning of a topic would be achieved through unit-studies while children enjoy the dynamics of collaborative learning and the benefits of being part of a multi-age, small group.
Students in the pod would choose what topic they would like to explore, and off we go, diving deep into vibrant unit studies. This student-driven approach to learning empowers students to take ownership of their learning and drives their inquiry.
For example, if the pod chose “ocean habitats” for their next topic, we would explore this theme across all curriculum areas. Students would be engaged in science lessons about ocean habitats and lessons in what ocean animals need to survive. We would conduct scientific experiments involving the water cycle and evaporation. Students would be working with partners to conduct research or create a group project. Ocean-themed art lessons would be enjoyed using various media. We would keep a learning journal of our discoveries, read and recite ocean animal poetry, write fact files and share our work with peers and parents.
Common core curriculum would not be taught explicitly, but would be threaded into all lessons and activities, giving a powerful and deep enrichment learning experience within a topic.
If there is a field trip that would support our learning, we’ll go! Pod students have been to the Audubon Society in Bristol, The State House in Providence, The Roger Williams Zoo and the RISD Museum.
What would my child’s day be like?
Drop off would be at 9 at our new East Providence location. We have a soft start as some families are commuting from afar. We have a morning meeting to discuss our learning goals for the day. Lessons in science, reading, writing, art and more would take place until our mid-morning snack break. This is followed by outdoor play and exploration. Then, back to more student-driven, inquiry based learning until noon. We will enjoy our packed lunch and have free play. The last hour of our day will be filled with topic lessons, poetry, physical education or art until pick-up at 2 sharp.
Regularly, families are invited into the classroom for the much-loved “Parent Showcase” where children can proudly demonstrate their learning to their family as they read their science journals, recite newly learned poems from their personal poem book, showing their displayed art work, explaining group projects and more!
